Dr. Matthias Weber is Head of Center for Innovation Systems and Policy at AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH in Vienna (Austria). Before joining AIT in 2000, he had been working for several years at the European Commission’s Institute for Prospective Technological Studies IPTS in Seville (Spain) and Ispra (Italy). He is regularly advising national governments, European institutions and international organisations on matters of research, technology and innovation policy from a forward-looking perspective. In recent years, he has served on several European Commission expert groups, including EFFLA (European Foresight on Forward-Looking Activities), SFRI (Strategic Foresight for Research and Innovation) and RISE (Research, Innovation and Science Policy Experts High-Level Group). He has also been leading and contributing to several major EU-funded research projects, including RIF (Research and Innovation Futures 2030), ETTIS (European Security Trends and Threats in Society), EFP (European Foresight Platform), and RISIS (Research Infrastructure for Research and Innovation Policy Studies). Currently, he is coordinating project BOHEMIA (Beyond the Horizon. Foresight in Support of the Preparation of the EU‘s Future Policy in Research and Innovation), which serves as input to the preparation of the European Commission’s next framework programme for research and innovation.

Since 1986 until 1992, he engaged in Studies of Mechanical and Process Engineering (University of Technology Aachen and University of Stuttgart). He graduated as a Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.), with a specialisation in chemical and heat process engineering.

He received M.A. (a Magister Artitum) with Studies of Political Science at University of Stuttgart (1988-1993), and Ph.D. with Economics at University of Stuttgart (1993-1998).
