Motoshige Itoh is currently an Emeritus professor at The University of Tokyo (since June 2016) and a Professor, Faculty of International Social Sciences, Gakushuin University, since April 2016. He is a Member of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, since January 2013.

He worked as Professor of Graduate School of Economics, Faculty of Economics in The University of Tokyo, April 1996 through March 2016. He served as President in National Institute for Research Advancement, February 2006 through March 2014. He has been Dean of Graduate School of Economics, Faculty of Economics in The University of Tokyo from October 2007 to September 2009. He was Professor, Faculty of Economics, The University of Tokyo, December 1993-March 1996 and Associate Professor in Faculty of Economics, The University of Tokyo, April 1982-November 1993; in Department of Economics, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Oct. 1979-March 1982 and in Department of Economics, University of Houston, Sep. 1978-June 1979.

He was Advisor, Statistical Division, Bank of Japan, 1997-98; A Member of Economic Strategy Council 1998-1999; Visiting Scholar, Department of Economics, Harvard University, 1984-85; Visiting Scholar, Australia-Japan Research Centre, Australian National University, 1988; Visiting Scholar (part time) Research Institute, Bank of Japan, 1988-90; Various Government Committee Member; Ministry of International Trade and Industry, Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning Agency, Fair Trade Commission and so on.

He holds Ph. D. in Graduate School of Economics from University of Rechester (1975-1978), and graduated from the graduate school of Economics at the University of Tokyo (1974-1975) and faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo (1974-1975).
